Volunteer Opportunities with MMS

Every year we run annual events and help other clubs with their events. We are always looking for help with the Greater Detroit Mineral, Gem, and Fossil show and community outreach events. Anyone in good standing with the club or associated with other Rock & Mineral clubs is not only welcome but greatly appreciated to come and help out at our events.

 

The Events where we always need help:

The Annual Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show

The Greater Detroit Gem, Fossil, and Mineral Show is a large, mid-west show that attracts thousands of people. We need volunteers for setting up the show, helping with display cases, running the show, ticket sales, show events, and tearing down at the end of the show. It is held in October at the McComb Expo Center, and we plan year-round to make the show a success.

Our Annual Auction

Every year in November, we hold an annual club auction to raise money for the club's altruistic programs and our field trips. An Auction is a time-consuming event. We need help setting up the auction materials, documenting everything for our club members, running the event, and ensuring everything runs smoothly. If you would like to be part of an auction and see how to make it successful, please reach out.

Equipment Repair

Help in this area is for those who like to work with their hands. We have aging display cases and new display cases that require attention. Any help in this area would be appreciated.

Board Positions

The Michigan Mineralogical Society Board extends its hand to let all club members know that we are always actively looking for new board members. We need people interested in running a state-wide club and those who have opinions on the club's direction and where it is should be going. We have board positions open and annual elections for new board members. New people and new ideas are always welcome.

Community Outreach

We are currently in need of a Chairperson for Community outreach and help on our Facebook page. We want to be a part of many additional events. If you have ideas about community events for MMS, we would love to implement them on our social media websites and in our community, and we love you to help out MMS!

Club Presentations

The Michigan Mineralogical Society plans about nine presentations each year with world-class presenters who help us understand the mineralogical world better and more fully with each session. Many of our presentations are stored on our 'Members Only' page for current club members to see and download. If you happen to know of someone who could present on geology, paleontology, or Mineral-based themes that they are passionate about, please let us know. We are always looking for presenters who can present via video conference or in person.

Marketing & Advertising

We are actively seeking club members with marketing and advertising experience for the Michigan Mineralogical Society. It could be an excellent opportunity for an internship! Marketing our club and going to events so we can raise awareness on MMS is an area in which we need much more help.

​

Field Trips

It's a great time to see the state's mineral resources and help keep everyone safe and on the same page when we go digging. Please reach out to help with field trips. If you think you can help with arranging and running a Michigan area field trip, or if you have any ideas on great places to go, please let us know.
